history; Rhysands start at life is not a promising one. Looking back, Rhysands mother Leandra, was born into a brutal place, where they view woman as nothing more than breeding machines to make the best and most elite warriors. She was prized for her coat and her build, her brilliant golden dun coat was considered a prize amongst their people, and thus her every movement was watched carefully. In their lands, women were not allowed to train, to learn how to fight or defend themselves, they were expected to stay fit, and bare children, nothing more. However, they were let to do as they pleased, for the most part anyways. Leandra enjoyed her freedom, taking to running long distances, or taking her time seeing the scenery and the places that surrounded it. They of course were never allowed to wander away from the harem without an escort, and they did little for conversation. She knew what was coming, as she approached her second year, and she did everything she could to try and avoid becoming fertile. She ate plants that made her violently ill, she drank from rivers that were questionable. All this did was delay the inevitable, and come her third year she had her first cycle.
The tradition was that the males had to fight in regards to claiming a mate, only the strongest were allowed to breed. So Leandra was forced to watch in horror as males lined up to fight for her, lasting nearly three days before one was crowned a winner. It was that day, when he was going to claim his prize, that Leandra was met by a new stallion. Not one from the Kinsky blood like her family, but different. His hide was a beautiful ebony color, marked only by the intricate of white pattern that made him stand out against the golds and whites around her herd. His name was Karo, and he had come from a neighboring harem to invest in some alliances with her people. Though when Karo set his eyes upon Leandra, he decided he wanted her for himself. He waited for the cover of darkness, before the winning stallion could come to 'claim his prize' and offered Leandra a chance to be free, to see the world. She did not hesitate to jump on the chance, and set forth with the stallion in the dead of night.
They did not stop, did not go back to his harem, as they ran and ran for months, trying to put as much distance between her family and them as they could. She had no doubt that the winning brute would be furious and would stop at nothing to claim what he thought was rightfully his. Karo and Leandra spent every waking moment together, and within a few months, it was evident that Leandra was pregnant. They still did not stop, moving from place to place, though their pace began to falter because of the pregnancy. As she progressed, Leandra found it harder and harder to keep going, having to stop frequently as her swollen belly made it hard for her to breath, and the miles began to ache upon her bones. Karo was always patient, always there and did not complain one bit.
However, it was one of those fateful nights, that they were ambushed, several of the stallions from her tribe catching them unawares. They took one look at her with her pregnant barrel and scorned her. They began to beat her, ruthlessly kicking and biting her, and having no skills of defense, she was basically helpless. Karo managed to kill two that had pounced on him, and hurtled himself on those that had gotten her, giving her time to flee, though when she looked back, she knew that it was the last time she would ever see Karo again. The mare pressed on, though she was no longer pursued, her value to them tainted by the babe she carried, but she didn't know and pushed herself, trying to put as many miles between her and them, ambling to get away and keep the only part left she had of Karo.
She managed to make it to the land of Wild Equines, though the injuries she sustained and the long trek took its toll. Her body went into labor, and it was everything her exhausted frame could do to have the foal. She managed to birth him, naming him Rhysand as he ate, but as she lay down with him, the life from her body faded, leaving the babe defenseless and on his own. He was later adopted by then Neutral Queen, Laqueta (Rhi).
